Spanish Language Program

At Saltwater P–9 College, our Spanish Language Program aims to develop students’ confidence and ability to communicate in Spanish while fostering an appreciation of languages, cultures and multiculturalism.

Students from Prep to Year 6 participate in weekly Spanish lessons through engaging activities, music, technology, creative projects and practical conversations. Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, our program encourages students to use Spanish in meaningful, everyday situations while developing their communication and intercultural understanding.

As part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), Spanish learning connects with students’ units of inquiry, encouraging curiosity, global awareness, global citizenship and respect for cultural diversity.

Through exploring Spanish-speaking countries, traditions and diverse cultures, students develop connections with the wider world and learn to value cultural diversity, inclusion and respect.

Our goal is to inspire enthusiastic, confident language learners who appreciate multiculturalism, celebrate differences and recognise the importance of communication in our interconnected world.

Mandarin Language Program

At Saltwater P–9 College, our Mandarin Language Program brings language and culture together, inviting students to explore how people communicate, celebrate and express themselves across Chinese-speaking communities.

Students from Prep to Year 6 participate in weekly Mandarin lessons aligned with the Victorian Curriculum. Through storytelling, songs, movement, interactive games and creative projects, students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Learning builds from greetings and familiar vocabulary to sharing ideas and taking part in everyday conversations.

Exploring the richness of Chinese culture is a central feature of our program. From the symbolism of festival traditions to paper cutting, regional food and the contrast between ancient landmarks and modern cities, students discover the connections between language, culture, and history. Learning about Chinese characters reveals how written forms convey meaning, while Pinyin and tones help students understand the sounds of Mandarin. These cultural and language experiences connect with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), encouraging students to investigate, make comparisons and bring new perspectives to their units of inquiry.

Our program encourages students to become confident communicators and thoughtful cultural explorers. By making connections between Chinese culture and their own lives, students develop an appreciation of different perspectives and the possibilities that learning another language can offer.
